Stage one
We sit down and talk first.
Before anything goes near your mouth, a dentist asks what brought you in, what has hurt, and what you have been putting off. It is a conversation, not an intake form read aloud.
Stage two
A cleaning that takes as long as it takes.
Hygiene appointments are booked at sixty minutes, not thirty, so nothing gets skipped at the end and nobody is standing in the doorway waiting for the room.
Stage three
You see your own images on the screen.
Scans and x rays go up on the monitor beside you, and the dentist walks through them out loud. If you cannot see what they are describing, they keep going until you can.
Stage four
You leave with a written plan and a price.
Recommended treatment, what it costs, what your insurance is likely to cover, and what can safely wait. In writing, before you agree to anything.
